Glew secures two podiums and continues his 2009 Clio Cup domination at the Snetterton circuit.

Rounds 13 and 14 Snetterton Circuit

Qualifying

Philip GlewGlew struggled with setup in qualifying, spending part of the session in the pits making changes to the car. Glew had pole for a short time but Team TCR had the car set up well and team mates MacDowall and Tordoff managed to get pole and 2nd for race 1 and 2.

For the first time this year Glew narrowly missed out on a front row position and started 3rd for race 1 and 2, happy in the knowledge that his tyres had done fewer laps than MacDowall’s and that it was still all to play for in the race.

Race 1

Philip GlewThe sun shone over the Norfolk circuit all day until as if on cue the rain clouds formed as the Clio Cup cars lined up on the gird for race 1. The drivers looked on ominously as the rain began to fall on their warm up lap and they tried their upmost to get heat into their slick tyres.

The lights went out and Glew made a brilliant start, passing Tordoff before the first corner and closing in on leader MacDowall. Momentum was lost by the end of the first lap as the safety car was deployed following a midfield incident allowing the field to bunch up again.

Philip GlewFollowing 2 safety car laps the race was on but the rain clouds produced a heavy downpour making conditions very difficult for the drivers. Glew was hot on MacDowall’s heels and felt that the leader was slowing him down and allowing Tordoff to stay on terms with the lead pair. MacDowall made a mistake at the Esses on lap 9 and Glew darted past him to claim the lead.

His lead was unfortunately short lived and as the circuit became saturated and the track conditions caught Glew out and he had a moment under braking at the Esses; the place where he had passed MacDowall on the previous lap. He regained his composure and managed to hold 3rd position.

Philip GlewGlew fought to get back on terms with the lead duo of MacDowall and Tordoff and looked sure to regain 2nd place in the closing laps of the race. Unfortunately the Clark of the course deemed the conditions too dangerous and the race was red flagged with 5 laps to go, depriving Glew of a chance to make up any further places. Following an action packed race Glew was pleased to finish on the podium and gain further vital Championship points.

Race 2

Philip GlewRace 2 provided yet more action as the front two rows of the grid made an equally good getaway and Glew pressured 2nd place man MacDowall through the first three corners. Glew took his opportunity to pounce at the Esses on the opening lap and pass championship rival MacDowall for 2nd place. MacDowall fought back and tapped the back of Glew’s car but he held his position.

MacDowall kept up the pressure and Glew in turn closed in on the bumper of first time leader Tordoff. MacDowall pushed hard and tried to make a move at Russell on lap 4 but Glew saw him coming and knew that he was too late on the brakes so allowed MacDowall to try and pass him. As he suspected MacDowall out braked himself and missed the corner, taking to the grass. Glew retained 2nd place and MacDowall’s mistake allowed Herron to pass him.

Philip GlewThe rest of the race proved pretty uneventful for the front runners. Glew felt happy in the knowledge that he was ahead of Championship rival MacDowall and settled for a 2nd place finish to rule out any unnecessary contact fighting for the lead.

After racking up an impressive seven wins and a further 5 podiums from 12 races, Glew now has a sizeable 76 point advantage over his nearest rival MacDowall and is edging ever closer to the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup title.

Glew commented "It has been a great weekend for Championship points despite a difficult qualifying session and I am happy to have taken two more podium finishes. It is a shame not to have a win but I have to think about Championship points at this stage of the season and not taking unnecessary risks."

Rounds 15 & 16 of the ELF Renault Clio Cup take place at Silverstone National Circuit on 29th + 30th August.
